BRIEF

Develop a series of editorial spreads on the article 'The Burnout Generation' by Anne Helen Petersen.

The intent for this piece is for readers to experience the text’s implications of burnout and exhaustion in its presentation as well as its content.

APPROACH

Working with the colour dubbed ‘Millenial Pink’, I chose to explore the juxtaposition of playful pink dots with high contrast and gritty imagery of objects at their breaking point. This contrast speaks to the youthful facade of Millennials as their light is simultaneously burning out due to stress. Adding one more visual layer, the pages appear to be burning away as the reader moves through the article, further evoking the titular concept.

RESULT

PROCESS

The process for developing this article began with deciding on a visual language. The palette is based off a colour known as 'Millennial Pink'. Next, I determined the grid system, opting for a three-column grid to open up the heavy text.

I then established a baseline grid using 13pt leading. This determined the spacing of the spreads. Following, I wireframes potential layouts testing how and where to introduce pull quotes and images. Finally, adjusting elements to the consideration of the natural eye flow as well as other key elements & principles of design.
